On-call rules·Options
How to handle after-hours emergencies without paging everyone.
True emergencies share a voicemail box with people asking about hours. Without intake that can tell “no heat with an infant” from “can I get a filter quote,” everything is either ignored or a false alarm.
Emergency handling is a rules problem. Write the questions. Page only when the answers match. Protect the on-call person and still catch the real ones.
What counts as an emergency is yours
Gas smell, active leak, no heat with occupancy, a tow on a highway — those are examples, not a universal list. A dental office and a restoration company will not share a tree. EXCEL does not invent one.
The agent does not diagnose
Intake can ask whether water is still moving or whether anyone smells gas. It should not tell someone how to bypass a limit switch or whether a tooth “can wait.” People still make those calls.
Options that actually exist
One voicemail for everything
Simple. The on-call phone stays quiet, including for the real emergency.
Page on every after-hours ring
Nobody stays on-call. False alarms burn the roster you need at 3am.
A human answering pool with a generic “is this urgent?”
Callers say yes. You still get woken for quotes.
Structured urgency questions plus on-call only on match
The usual EXCEL path. You write the questions. Dispatch stays with the contractor.
Where EXCEL fits
AI Answering Service and AI Receptionist can run the tree you approve. They do not staff trucks. They do not decide that a situation is safe. Book a consultation if you want the night rules written down once.

Questions for this intent
What counts as an emergency?
You define it. The agent asks the questions that sort urgent from wait-until-morning. There is no universal medical or trade protocol on this page.
Can it tell a caller to wait it out?
Only if you approved that language. Default is capture and route, not medical or mechanical advice.
Is this a generic script or built around our business?
EXCEL builds around your hours, services, and approved answers. A shared operator book is a different product. Discovery exists to write your call types down.
Where do we see pricing?
Essential, Professional, and Custom plans are on the live pricing page. Fit depends on workflows, usage, and integrations — scoped in a consultation, not guessed here.
Do we have to replace the people who answer today?
No. The usual design is overflow, after-hours, or a first pass so people handle exceptions, walk-ins, and judgment. Replacement is your decision.
Can it use our existing phone number?
Usually yes. How calls arrive is reviewed in discovery. Do not assume a full phone-system replacement.
When does a person still take the call?
Whenever your rules say so: emergencies, billing disputes, anything the agent is not allowed to answer. Escalation is configuration.
Will this invent answers we did not approve?
It should not. Approved knowledge and hard stops are the build. Guessing a policy is how automation creates more work.
Write the on-call rules once. Let every night follow them.
Bring the real call types. We will tell you what belongs in an agent and what should stay with people.
